Let’s start the year with a bit of a crappy subject – yeah, that joke is probably beaten to death. Anyway, overeating can cause a myriad of physical problems outside of simple weight gain. Depending on your physiology, diarrhea is one of them. Well, for me it is. But only if I excessively eat more than one day in a row. I realize that this may be a sensitive subject for some, but let me explain to you how diarrhea affects me. Someone out there may have similar experiences.
The Physical Damage from Diarrhea
Diarrhea is more than just an embarrassing moment if you’re in public. It can quickly deplete the body of water and cause severe dehydration. This is especially dangerous in infants and the elderly.
This condition can be caused by a variety of circumstances ranging from environmental to nutritional complications. Often, diarrhea affects those who have been infected by foreign elements or it’s a condition that is a symptom of a more prominent illness. In any case, it can be dangerous to have bouts with diarrhea without replenishing the body of water. This is why it’s important to keep yourself hydrated when suffering from such problems.
Is Excessive Food to Blame for Your Diarrhea?
There are several ways one can get diarrhea, such as viral and bacterial infections. However, I am focusing on whether or not you can get it by eating too much. According to physicians, diarrhea can be caused by a significant increase of the weight in your stool that is passed in a day. It may also be caused by irritable bowel syndrome or a reaction to certain kinds of foods.
How it Affects Me
For myself, I’ve noticed this problem when I consume more than 1000 calories of food over my daily goal – and only if it’s done twice in a row. I’ve also noticed how the experience is greater with tomato food products such as pizza or spaghetti. If my calories are in the red by more than 1000 according to MyFitnessPal, I can pretty much brace myself for spending some quality time on the toilet the next day. The more I eat, the worse the experience becomes. This is part of why I am resolving myself to a healthier lifestyle.
What I Do to Get Rid of Diarrhea
When I get diarrhea from overeating, I simply get rid of it by eating better. Keeping my calories in the green seems to solve the problem every time within a day or two. No medications, liquids or tricks are needed – at least in my situation. I can’t say with certainty that this will help you if you’re in a similar situation. However, this works for me every time I overeat. I’ve been studying this problem of myself for the past three years, so I am confident that I know what I’m talking about.
Preventing Diarrhea from Overeating
The obvious way to prevent diarrhea from overeating is to consume less food. A lot of people have a difficult time with this aspect, including myself. Personally, I track everything in MyFitnessPal to get an idea of how much I am eating throughout the day. The hardest part is keeping the mindset of remaining in the green.
Unfortunately, many people are stress eaters. I am also one of those who eat when depressed or stressed out. If you believe you may have a similar problem, you need to figure out what the underlying cause is and fix the situation. A lot of people who binge eat have some sort of mental problem that needs to be addressed. Seeking therapy in any form could help reduce the chances of eating too often while reducing the amount of time you spend on the toilet.
