The idea behind the Progresso Soup Diet is to lose weight while the primary mainstay is the product. Because Progresso has so many flavors and types available, it’s easy to maintain and not feel bored with eating the same thing day-in and day-out. That is, unless you get tired of soup. But does this plan really work for losing weight?
Losing Weight with the Progresso Soup Diet
I stumbled across the Progresso Soup Diet purely by accident. At first, I only bought the product because I am a fan of the brand. I love the wide selection and found it more healthy and fulfilling than Chef Boyardee.
Essentially, I made it a primary staple throughout the week because it was easy to make. Little did I know it would be responsible for helping me shed the first 20 pounds within two months.
So, does the Progresso Soup Diet really work? From my perspective, I would have to say, “Yes.”
However, that isn’t saying that it will work for everyone. Because we all have a different physiology, what works for me may not work for you. All I can really do is share my experiences and let you judge for yourself.
How I Made the Soup Diet Work
It’s relatively easy to make a soup diet work, as long as you’re paying attention to the rest of your day. You’re not going to get everything you need from any one meal.
A soup diet has great potential to work, especially given its higher water content. Water helps digest foods quicker, which means they move through your system faster. This could be both good and bad, depending on your individual circumstance.
With that being said, here’s how I made the Progresso Soup Diet work for me.
Addressing Sodium intake
While I do love Progresso Soup, it does contain a large amount of sodium. Luckily, you can buy the “low sodium” version of the brand. Unfortunately, it’s mostly water compared to its original counterpart and may turn you off if you want something with more bulk.
To offset the sodium intake, I would drink more water while eating things with less sodium content throughout the day.
In reality, I don’t have much of a problem with sodium. In fact, I have a problem with low blood pressure regardless of eating a lot of salty foods. It’ll probably catch up with me sooner or later, but for now I don’t really have problems adapting to the sodium content in soup.
How Often Do I Eat Progresso?
When I lost the most weight, I was eating soup for lunch and most dinners. There were times when I would mix it up a bit and have something different throughout the day. But for the most part, it was soup.
Because of situations in my life, my consistency with eating soup has been a bit haphazard. Between moving, being without a car and trying to get on my feet, it’s been difficult to stay the course.
Currently, I am planning to have a can for lunch and a Lean Cuisine for dinner every day this week.
In the past, my daily meals looked kind of like this:
- Breakfast: Instant Cream of Wheat with mixed berries
- Lunch: Progresso Soup – flavor varied from day-to-day
- Dinner: More soup
I also mixed in multivitamins and various dairy products for calcium and other nutrients.
Like I said, though, I did have various other foods for dinner once in a while. For instance, I would walk extra steps on days I wanted pizza. I found a good balance and lost a lot of weight in the meantime.
I am a big fan of MyFitnessPal. It’s a great app for those who want to watch their caloric intake.
Every day, I will record my eating habits and adjust the day to keep calories within a certain goal. Most Progresso Soups are incredibly light compared to other foods you can eat. This makes them great for calorie watchers.
This was one of the major reasons why I stuck with the brand for so long. Instead of a 400+ calorie can of pasta, I can satisfy myself with something like a 220 calorie can of Chicken and Wild Rice.
Keeping calories green in MyFitnessPal is the key to my ability to lose weight on this soup diet. If I need extra calories for something I want to eat later, I simply add in some kind of physical activity.
This process is what has driven my to lose 60 pounds so far with 50 to go.
Why the Progresso Soup Diet?
To be honest, I really didn’t put much thought into why I chose this brand instead of others. I’ve always had an affinity for Progresso Soup and simply like the brand with all of its flavors.
I’ve seen many similar types of diets spotted throughout the Internet. I suppose any one of them could work in a similar fashion. It all boils down to maintaining health and monitoring your intake.
Would I Consider Other Types of Soup?
As long as the soup diet fit my personal criteria, I wouldn’t mind trying some other brands. In fact, I do like some of Campbell’s soups as they offer a few flavors aside from what Progresso has.
In reality, it’s all up to the individual and whether you can sustain healthy eating. And like any product on the market, it is possible to gain weight if you gorge yourself on nothing but soup.
Why Eat a Variety of Soups?
One of the reasons I like variety in flavor is because each provides a different level of nutrition and vitamins. Some will have a higher protein content while others have more vitamin A. It’s all about creating balance of what the body needs throughout the week.
You need to also consider eating the same meals over and over. It’s easy to get bored with one type of food, unless you really love it. For example, one of my most common breakfasts is eggs and sausage. However, I’ll eat oatmeal and Cream of Wheat just to mix it up a bit.
What About the High Sodium Content?
Obviously, those who cannot have higher levels of sodium may want to choose alternative foods. A whole can of Progresso Soup can range around the 1600mg mark. Actually, a single serving should be all that you need. But not everyone can just eat half a can of soup.
Unfortunately, I can’t find a very wide selection of low-sodium Progresso. However, I do sometimes add the ones available simply because they are incredibly low in calories.
Can You Lose Weight Eating Progresso Soup?
A soup diet isn’t as bad as some might think. I’ve lost a lot of weight thanks partially to Progresso. But in the end, it’s the person on the diet who makes the decision to eat better. Just keep in mind even though I lost weight, it doesn’t guarantee you will.
