The Super Bowl is an extremely popular event here in the United States. It’s a day when many will toss their diets aside from some good snacks and an intense battle between football titans. This year surely didn’t disappoint. However, it’s the pigging-out portion that’s going to slow me down.
To reach my goal weight before my son’s graduation, I needed to lose 0.4 pounds per day. Consuming about 5,000 calories worth of junk on Super Bowl Sunday probably hurt my chances of reaching the goal.
However, this isn’t going to stop me from trying. And that’s the key to a successful strategy. Just because things don’t go your way doesn’t mean you should give up on the whole.
It just means you need to put in more effort to succeed.
One Day of Binge Eating Shouldn’t Destroy Your Plans
I don’t believe in keeping to an ultra-strict diet plan. One day of treating yourself like an amusement park shouldn’t impact your overall weight loss plans if you go back to maintaining your diets and exercise.
This is why even though I ate way more food than I should have on Sunday I will still wind up losing weight by the end of the week.
Keep the Burn Alive
The most important thing to keep in mind is maintaining activity. Keeping active is key to burning off calories and fats, especially after gorging yourself. In this case, I went back to my morning exercise routine of playing the Xbox Kinect.
I finally got the tennis game back and extremely happy with the sweat I worked up this morning.
Part of losing weight is burning more than you consume. If you go back to getting a good amount of physical activity, you can quickly burn off the snacks you had during the Super Bowl.
It’s all about keeping yourself moving, even if you feel bloated and on the verge of popping. Anything from a simple walk to a grueling 30 minutes of tennis is going to help you burn those excess calories.
Getting Back to the Real Diet
I empower myself to fall off the diet wagon occasionally. Sometimes it’s difficult to get back into the mindset of an actual diet, but it must be done to meet weight loss goals.
A lot of people have a hard time with getting back into the mindset of eating healthier after a weekend of binge eating. This is another reason I don’t succumb to restrictive diets.
Everything I ate on Sunday, I can eat this week…just far less of it.
For me, it’s all about what I can fit in my daily routine according to MyFitnessPal. As long as some kind of healthy addition makes it to my plate, all is well.
After all, this is how I lost the first 60 pounds. I eat what I want, I just make sure it’s in logical portion sizes.
Giving Yourself Permission to Be Bad
One of the biggest reasons why I give myself a pass on fitness once in a while is to keep myself from getting burned out. If you maintain the same activity and diet plan day-after-day, it’s easy to get frustrated and depressed.
I’m not saying that everyone who has a routine diet and exercise plan will be depressed later. However, many of us easily fail because of this mentality.
It’s OK to permit yourself to a bad day once in a while. As long as you don’t make a habit of it, that cupcake is not going to add 10 pounds to the scale.
I have no doubt that I can get under 230 pounds inside the next seven days even after having a horrible eating day on Super Bowl Sunday.
What To Do with Leftovers
Currently, my fridge is full of meats and dips. Chips fill my cupboard. According to my Net 600 Diet, I can still eat some of these. The problem is making sure none of it goes to waste, which will be difficult considering how much is left.
Portion Sizes and Snacks
I am still able to have snacks and lose weight because I portion everything out. Instead of binge eating a bag of chips, I’ll have a proper portion size. For example, one frosted Lofthouse cookie is a single, 160-calorie serving…not three or four.
Monitoring portion sizes is part of enabling you to eat more of the things you “think” are bad. Just remember to add in some fruit and veggies. Not only will healthy alternatives fill your stomach on fewer calories, but you also need the vitamins and minerals within them.
You can’t simply live off snacks alone. The human body requires a certain level of nutrition to work correctly.
Burning More to Eat More
One of the methods I’ve used in the past to lose weight is burning as many calories as I can to eat more food. This is logical as your food is turned into fuel anyway.
In one instance, I walked a few miles just so I could have more pizza one night. This was during the height of my first 20 pounds of weight loss.
Now, I highly doubt I can burn off enough to eat what was left from watching the Super Bowl, but it’ll give me a bit of space to make sure some of it doesn’t go to waste.
That’s part of my weight problem…wasting food. I don’t believe in tossing food out, so I would eat it. The end result was ballooning up to 290 pounds!
Nowadays, I only serve and buy enough food to keep me alive. Well, with the exception of special events like the Super Bowl. That was just a stupid amount of food we probably could have done without.
Never Give Up, Never Surrender!
Just because you have one bad day of no physical activity and a poor diet doesn’t mean you should give up on the rest of your goals. It’s OK to grant yourself a bit of leeway in terms of health and fitness. As long as you return to your strategy for weight loss, a single day isn’t going to throw your body into the crapper.
