Planning Out a Book of My Fitness Journey

Updated

As a freelance writer, I’ve often wondered what it would be like to publish something outside of blog posts. Originally, I thought it would be something more creative. But lately, I’ve been thinking about writing out my fitness journey.

And to be honest, I’m not sure if it’ll be a smash hit or not. But I do know that it’s not going to be like all those other success stories you see or read about.

In reality, it’s been a very difficult and long road.

Why Focus on My Fitness Journey?

I’m not one who can say that I dropped a lot of weight in a short amount of time. In fact, it’s taken years to get where I am today.

Let’s put it this way, I am thinking about naming it, “How to Lose 100 Pounds in Just 5 Short Years.”

It’s Not Been an Easy Road

Losing weight hasn’t been easy for me. And it’s not because my genetics won’t allow it. On the contrary, I can melt fat quickly if I actually put in the effort.

No; my problem is more mental than anything. Between depression, fighting off a mid-life crisis and downright laziness, it’s taken a long time to hit below 220 pounds.

And for those who follow me on various social platforms, this is to break down how difficult it can be for someone like me to become healthy. It’s not always the perfect, Instagram photo of some sexy beast who busted out a 6-week workout routine.

Sometimes the road is far more rocky and wrought with dips, hurdles, stones and hitchhikers.

It May be More Relatable to the Average Person

The book about my fitness journey is aimed more at the average Joe. Someone who can’t seem to motivate themselves no matter what and who would rather spend the time watching Netflix or YouTube.

Because I’m not some superhero Instagram model, it makes me more relatable to average people. Not everyone has access to gyms or has the money to dump into mainstream fad diet plans.

This is me. I am that person.

Perhaps my book can help others in their struggles as I have struggled in my weight loss adventure.

It’s More for Myself than Anything

Lastly, I want to write the book simply because it might help me overcome a few more hurdles for myself.

By putting everything down in writing and rehashing some of my past experiences, perhaps I can find new truths about myself. Maybe I can find a greater motivation to succeed in my goals.

So while I would love to be on the New York Times Best Seller list, I’m looking more to help others as well as myself. If I make a name for myself or bring in a few bucks, all the better.

But in the end, it’s all about doing what I can to build a healthier body. I really don’t want my heart to stop again, and I would love to go swimming in public without worrying about wearing a tank top.

What’s Going in the Book?

The book is going to be about my fitness journey. Which means it’ll tell a tale from the moment I realized I was out of shape while camping.

How I was unrecognizable in 2013 because my face was so round and fat.

And what brought me to that point where I was slowly killing myself through depression, poor eating and lack of physical activity.

I’m also going to break down exactly what I’ve done to drop the weight. This includes changing my eating habits while still enjoying sweets and how I shaped my body without fad diet plans.

I hate restrictive diets!

The book will include how I increased physical activity to burn off the fat. It’s all about gamification and finding an activity you truly enjoy. For me, it’s all about the Xbox Kinect.

In essence, I am going to break down every single thing I did right and wrong to lose weight and build a healthier body. No filler, no fluff and no blowing smoke up anyone’s ass.

It’s a real breakdown of my struggles, failures and what I did to overcome them.

Where am I Publishing?

I am leaning towards publishing my fitness journey with Create Space. It’s an Amazon company that is digital as well as print-on-demand. Which means I can buy my book and stick it on the bookshelf.

At least I’ll have my name on the spine of a book at that point.

Of course I am open to explore other avenues, though. Needless to say, I don’t have the money for an agent or editor. All of this is going to be 100% on my own.

But, just think of the sense of pride I’ll feel even if I sell just one book.

When Will I Publish the Book?

I am working on my fitness journey. My biggest fear is that I may never actually finish. I have a problem with starting projects, going strong for a while and then moving on to something else.

In fact, it’s one of my biggest failings that I am adding into the book. I’m not too bad at the self-starting aspect of things. My problem is maintaining something until it is done.

Hopefully that won’t be the case in this instance. I’d love to actually finish something, especially if it has potential to help others.

Of which, I am sure the book has potential.

Is My Fitness Journey a Worthy Read?

I don’t know if anyone is really going to get into my fitness journey. It’s filled with how I deal with negativity, my own shortcomings and what I do to move past them.

Unfortunately, I also suffer from impostor syndrome. So of course I am going to bash my own abilities. However, a lot of people express how I am a good writer and that I should continue.

I just wish I had as much faith in myself as they have in me. Life would be so much easier to manage.

Final Thoughts…

Once I am done with the book, I will blast it on social media as well as a browser notification. That way, everyone who knows me will see that I have something available.

I’m quite excited, actually. I thought for sure my first book would be something more along the lines of a fictional tale. But like I said, this is more to help me reach my personal goals than anything.

I still want to work on horror, science fiction and fantasy. Right now, though, I think I need something to help me piece together the mess that is my life.
