Fitness in Theory – Episode 22: Avoiding Burnout

FiT Podcast Episode 22
26 May

In this episode, we talk about burning out and ways to avoid doing so. Though, like most other shows, it went off the rails relatively quickly, and I don’t think we really did the topic justice. Perhaps there is a Part 2 in the future?

In any case, burnout affects a lot of us whether it’s related to our fitness routines or professional lifestyles. And if there is one thing I know it’s how to manage burning out. Given the sheer amount of stuff I do throughout the week, it can get maddening at times.

Now that I think about it, yes, we will be doing Part 2 on this topic and really do it justice. Still, it’s a fun show, and that’s all that really matters to us most of the time.

Keeping Your Sanity Together

There are a lot of things we can do to keep our heads in the game. For me, I tend to walk and take time away from the computer throughout the day. Not to mention that I have a lot of fun recording data, so every day is like a game to me.

However, there are a lot of people out there who just don’t know what to do when their stress levels escalate. Not everyone has the same capacity to adapt. That’s why you’ll often see people stressing over things you think of as mundane. Everyone has a unique breaking point, and the trick is to preemptively do what you can to avoid that moment.

Unfortunately, a lot of people turn to drugs and/or alcohol in order to cope. Yet, those things really don’t help solve the underlying issues, which is why a lot of people wind up addicts.

I’ve known quite a few people like this over the years, including losing a couple of family members due to alcoholism.

If you can’t find a way through the tunnel, seek help. There’s nothing wrong with reaching out, and there are many people out there who truly want to see you succeed. All you need to do is ask.

How Do You Avoid Burnout?

My methods for adaptation depend on the circumstance. Sometimes a good, long walk will do the trick to help me unwind. Other times, I need to just slow things down as much as possible.

What methods do you use to keep yourself from collapsing when the world is bearing down on you?
