As I am closing in on my goal weight, I try to find places to get a decent meal that isn’t going to put my calorie count in the dumpster. In this case, I decided to give the HuHot Mongolian Grill a try on Northfield Boulevard. And I can say that it was a pleasant experience.
Although, it is a bit on the pricey side. Then again, what restaurant isn’t nowadays?
What is HuHot Mongolian Grill?
Think of an all-you-can-eat buffet where they cook the food right in front of you, that’s kind of what HuHot Mongolian Grill centers on. Imagine combining a Benihana with a Golden Corral, only with healthier foods.
For just over $10, you can mix up your own bowl of foods tailored to exactly what you want. Then, the cooks grill it out in the open where you get a bit of a show.
Where is HuHot Mongolian Grill Located?
As of this article, we have three HuHot grills near the Denver metro area. The one I went to is in the Shops at Northfield Stapleton area.
The landscape reminds me of Santa Monica just before you get to the pier. With overhead lights and a variety of shopping, the HuHot Mongolian Grill in Stapleton is kind of like the gatekeeper to an afternoon of commercialism.
Why Would You Want to Visit?
The HuHot Mongolian Grill is a bit fancier than something like Golden Corral, but it still has a bit of the same ambiance. People stand in line to grab their food like kids waiting in line at the lunch counter in school.
Only in this instance, you can watch the cooks cook.
While the cooks do their thing, they move around the grill each flipping and mixing food as they get to it. At one point, they had perfect rhythm, and it was quite impressive to watch.
When all is said and done, it’s a good place to take friends, family, or even a date.
Just remember to fill your bowl to the point of overflowing. It may look like a lot of food, but it will cook down to about 1/3 of its size.
How is HuHot for Health?
HuHot has a lot of choices on its tables for both meats and vegetables. And all of them appear to be quite fresh. This means HuHot is probably one of the healthiest places to eat in terms of nutrition.
That’s because the options for customizing nutrients is quite extensive. You could go so far as to make a vegetarian dish if you so choose.
Of course, this depends on what you load into your bowl for cooking. And it also depends on where HuHot gets the veggies and meats. I didn’t see an “organic only” sign or anything pointing to the fact, but it still tasted excellent and fresh.
Although the noodles probably aren’t the healthiest thing you can throw into your bowl, the rest of the layout is. You can combine spinach, bamboo shoots, onions, and more to make your meal a unique experience.
If you’re looking for a reduced-carb diet, this is certainly the place to go as you can add whatever your dietary needs require.
Something else you need to keep in mind; just because you have a lot of healthy options doesn’t mean you should gorge yourself. It’s possible to overeat even the healthiest of foods.
Portion everything wisely.
What Are Some Notable Features?
HuHot offers quite a bit in terms of dining out. While it may not be for everyone, it’s one of those places I’ll most likely visit again. Well, after saving up a bit of money anyway.
Customizing Your Meal
Perhaps the most important facet to HuHot Mongolian Grill is customizing your lunch to fit your wants perfectly. Unlike places like Subway, you have absolute control over what exactly goes into your bowl.
Want more meat? Add it. Trying to create a balance between protein and veggies? Mix it up. It’s all 100% your call. However, you do need to add a specific amount of sauce so everything cooks right.
And the waitress advises you on that point before you go get your first bowl.
Getting Your Protein
You have a great selection of meats such as beef, chicken and pork as well as a few varieties of sausage. And I can say the sausage alone is worth the visit.
The meat is thinly cut, which means it cooks relatively quick on the open grill. This is key since some veggies you might want to add often cook at a different pace.
To keep the meat safe and fresh, it comes out of the cooling pans frozen. While it might not sound appealing to some, it’s definitely worth the experience. Out of all the meats I tried, each was cooked to perfection.
Variety of Veggies
One thing I love about HuHot Mongolian Grill is the wide selection of vegetables to add to your bowl. Personally, I love piling on onions, green peppers and mushrooms. However, there were about 20 different add-ins when I visited.
You can have as little or as much as you’d like. It’s all customized as you pick and choose what you want to accompany your meat…if anything at all. You can essentially create a vegetable-only masterpiece if you’d like.
Lots of Sauces to Choose From
To combine everything, and to make sure your meats and veggies don’t burn to the stovetop, you can select your sauce. I found the teriyaki to be simply amazing. My friend combined a variety of sauces to create a completely unique taste.
It’s all up to you and what you want to experience. And because it’s all you can eat, you don’t have to be afraid of creating something that turns out to be nasty.
Calorie Count Labels
Another thing that stands out for me at HuHot Mongolian Grill is the labels above the food and sauces displaying the number of calories. If you’re trying to watch your intake like I am, you can get a good gauge about what you’re consuming by adding everything up.
Incredible for Those on the Keto Diet
Because of the sheer possibilities for proteins and fats without the carbs, HuHot is probably one of the best places to dine for those on the Keto diet. You could go so far as to have a complete protein day if you choose.
The only real threat to your diet would be from the sauces. As long as you don’t go overboard, though, you probably won’t get a lot of carbs from many of them.
Personally, I mix nothing but meats and veggies without adding fillers like noodles or rice. I do like bamboo shoots, though.
The Bottom Line…
I can understand the price of an all-you-can-eat buffet. After all, there are some people out there who can really pack it away. Unfortunately, it’s a bit spendy for me to visit on a regular basis.
Probably because I don’t make a lot of money.
At any rate, HuHot Mongolian Grill is definitely a place I will visit again in the future. Not to mention how it gives me ideas for cooking something at home in the same manner.
