I’ve had a very difficult time falling and staying asleep lately. If I’m not laying in bed for hours on end wide awake, I am waking up at 2:30 in the morning for no real reason like clockwork. So, I decided to give the Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care Tea a try from Celestial Seasonings. I can say with certainty that it has been extremely helpful since I started drinking it.

What Is Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care Tea?

Just as the name implies, Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care tea is intended to knock you out while caring for your body. It’s loaded with components that are believed to be helpful when it comes to relaxation while boosting your immunity.

As your body will build up its defenses against viral and bacterial infections while you sleep, this tea is like adding reinforcements to the front line. At least, that is the claim of the product.

Why Would You Want Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care Tea?

When it comes to teas and holistic medicines, I am quite the skeptic. However, I don’t believe in popping pills any time you feel, “off.” Essentially, I suffer through my aches and pains until they subside. Fortunately for me, this tea is incredible and I’ve slept better the past few days than I have the past few weeks.

While I do like the taste of chamomile and lemongrass, this is definitely not something I would drink in the early morning or afternoon. About 20 to 30 minutes after drinking a 10 ounce cup of the tea, I feel quite drowsy.

The first day, I had two cups of this stuff and I crashed like an eight-year old coming down from a sugar rush.

Where Can You Find Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care Tea?

Essentially any store that sells tea should have this product. I bought my box of it at Von’s here in Los Angeles. A friend of mine picked it up at Walmart in Colorado. It’s one of those products that may be in most grocery stores.

At the time of this post, you can also buy it directly from Celestial Seasonings at their online store. Coincidentally, there is free shipping on orders over $49.

Will Sleepytime Echinacea Work For You?

Sleeping at WorkA lack of sleep can do amazing things to the human body. It’s vastly important you find a way to relax at night or you could suffer anything ranging from high blood pressure to hallucinations.

One of the biggest things I promote on this website is how everyone has a different physiology. What works beautifully for one person may not be beneficial for another. As such, I can safely say that this tea knocked me right out and kept me down throughout the night.

If you have trouble sleeping, I would suggest you try this product. Though, I felt pretty groggy when I woke up the morning I used two of these packets, so I would suggest keeping it to one per night.

Ingredients
Here are the supplement facts directly from the packaging. I will list all of the primary components as well as those listed in the “other ingredients” portion. Sometimes trace amounts of a product can make a difference.

  • Vitamin C – 36mg or 60% of Daily Value
  • Zinc – 5.25mg or 35% of Daily Value
  • Echinacea
  • European Elderberry extract
  • European Elderflower extract
  • Eucalyptus
  • Stevia
  • Chamomile
  • Spearmint
  • Peppermint
  • Lemongrass
  • Tilia Flowers
  • Orange Blossoms

The Science Behind This Product

I use my Fitbit Charger HR for a lot of stuff throughout the day. With this unit, I keep a close eye on my sleeping patterns. In any given day, I am restless or awake almost an hour during the night. For the past few nights, my average of restlessness has been reduced to approximately 30 minutes.

Not to mention the fact that I am actually going to sleep between 10:00 and 11:30pm, which is much sooner than the 2:30 to 3:00am episodes as of late.

It may not sound like a lot, but it is monumental for someone who hasn’t slept in a very long time. So, what components are in the Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care that help me relax?

Vitamin C

Although there is apparent research that links vitamin C to shorter and nonrestorative sleep[1], I am unable to verify the claim. However, vitamin C supplements have been used to treat short and long-term memory performance in sleep deprivation, with rats.[2] I suspect vitamin C was added to the tea to help boost the immune system during the night.

Zinc

Zinc has been found to improve the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which means it will help those who suffer from insomnia as well as restlessness.[3] It has also been determined that zinc acts as an antioxidant within humans and contributes to the immunity system.[4]

Echinacea

Echinacea is a widely used supplement to treat a range of health conditions. It’s been around for hundreds of years and used by millions. Echinacea has yet to prove itself as a solid way to treat something like the common cold.[5] However, laboratory tests show how it can boost the immune system as well as relieve pain and reduce inflammations.

European Elderberry Extract

Although the findings for elderberry extract show that people are still likely to get a common cold, the symptoms were far less and the duration of the sickness was shortened by roughly two days.[6] This means you will probably still get sick, but it will be far less severe than what it could be.

European Elderflower Extract

Elderflower is used in a range of products from mouthwash to treatment of joint pains.[7] While researching this plant, I did find a few studies that involved elderflower and its uses. Unfortunately, most of them were so convoluted that it was difficult to pull facts from.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is another plant that has been used widely over the years. You can find scientific evidence supporting how it can be used to strengthen immune response, act as an antiseptic and be used as an anti-inflammatory.[8] I did find an article stating how eucalyptus can be used to promote sleep as aromatherapy, but am having trouble finding scientific proof for it.[9] Please, send me a message if you know of a real sleep-related study.

Stevia

Stevia is a sweetener that had some bad press in the later part of the 1900s. It was reported to cause cancer, however studies are still inconclusive that is the case. In fact, long-term studies demonstrate it has potential to lower blood pressure. It may deliver positive results to glucose tolerance as well, but not enough research has been conducted.[10][11]

Chamomile

Chamomile is like the Swiss Army knife of the plant world. It aids in a variety of ailments other than being used as the popular sleep aid. It contributes to everything from anxiety to osteoporosis.[12] In fact, it’s use as a wound-healing agent is observable as well.

Spearmint

A lot of people simply enjoy the taste of spearmint. However, it also has use as a way to treat a variety of digestive disorders. Its properties are also seen in treating colds, sore throats, toothaches and even types of cancer.[13]

Peppermint

Peppermint is another component people just like the taste of. Although there is a ton of information on websites regarding how it’s usable as a sleep aid, I haven’t found actual scientific information to support the claim. I did manage to find a study that supports how peppermint can act as an antimicrobial and antiviral agent. However, not enough research has been done for human consumption.[14]

Lemongrass

Another element people like the taste of is lemongrass. It also has an incredible number of benefits such as use as an antibacterial, as an antioxidant and improving neurobehavioral effects involving, yep, sleep.[15]

Tilia Flowers

Tilia is part of the Linden genus of plant life. It’s found to be helpful in treating colds, headaches and fevers while also relaxing muscle spasms. Linden itself is believed to be able to relieve anxiety. Unfortunately, more research is needed to form a more solid opinion.[16]

Orange Blossoms

I haven’t found any real solid evidence that orange blossoms actually help people fall asleep outside of homeopathic websites. However, there is a general consensus that orange blossoms are usable in a wide range of treatments including sleep.[17]

What Does This All Mean?

Positive MindWhen taking all the scientific data into account, Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care tea has great potential for inducing sleep while assisting the body in repairing itself at night. I’m not exactly sure how much Celestial Seasonings uses in the proprietary blend of each component. But, I do know that it has greatly affected my own sleep study.

Even my friend cut her restlessness in half through the night while sleeping after drinking this tea.

So far, I’ve had nothing but positive results and have been actually remembering my dreams for a change. I’m not saying that this tea will induce a dreaming state, but I find it a nice coincidence after a long period of not remembering a single dream at night.

What’s the Best Way To Use It?

Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care is a tea. Obviously you would drink it in a nice hot cup of water. It’s recommended to mix the packet with eight ounces of water, but I have a 10 ounce coffee cup I use for everything…and it works fine.

I would suggest drinking it about 30 minutes before going to bed. I know I start to get drowsy relatively quick and can see how this could affect your day if you drink it sooner.
