I know…it’s been a while since Crossing Colorado had a steady amount of content published. And while I can blame it on laziness, it has more to do with being uber busy lately. However, I am getting a handle on time management. But what does this mean?
It means I am focusing more on branding and building myself up across all my platforms. And although I am the Content Management Team Lead for my client, I want to be remembered as more than just a glorified, low-level blogger.
In reality, I want to help people. It’s why I built all three of my blogs, actually. And also why I now have MichaelBrockbank.com, my personal branded site.
I got the idea from the organizers at WordCamp Kansas City as they wanted a centralized way to see what I do.
Anyway, what about Crossing Colorado?
Rebuilding Crossing Colorado
Recently, I saw the numbers drop considerably in visits thanks to Google’s most recent algorithm changes. Which means I need to work harder to get back to where I was in the results page.
So, there are plenty of things I want to do with the site and YouTube channel. But I need to keep myself focused on time management. I guess I am just getting to a point where I am just tired of doing the bare minimum in everything.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not all about fame and glory. But I wouldn’t mind crawling out of poverty level, though. Which I could do if I dropped all of my other projects and simply worked all day as a freelance writer.
But that’s not what drives me.
I want to share what I’ve learned and hopefully help a few people out along the way. And if I can pay a few bills while doing it, so much the better.
Today, I am refocusing efforts on:
Updating Older Content
Part of the Google algorithm changes affects content that hasn’t been updated in quite some time. I’m not the only one who saw a massive drop in traffic because of this.
The fun part is trying to do these updates while creating new content. Since I have three blogs and a full-time client as well as the YouTube channels, updating might be a bit more difficult than I would imagine.
However, as I said, it’s all about time-management. Scheduling specific days for certain blogs and YouTube videos is going to help. I just need to focus and put in the effort to maintain that schedule.
The story of my life. I’ve been talking about schedules since 2015…sigh.
Regularly Publishing, Again
Another part of my dip in traffic is a lack of published content. I want to get back into creating informative articles to help people in their weight loss journey.
Since this is from a desk jockey’s perspective, it’s unique enough to engage an audience. Well, I hope, anyway.
I like doing reviews and such. Again…it’s all about managing my time better.
Greater Focus on Health and Fitness
I was down to 216 at one point. Then, over the last couple of months, I went back up to 226 pounds. It’s less than a week from my 43rd birthday and I still haven’t reached my goal weight.
It’s kind of difficult to help others if I cannot help myself. Other than the premise of, “learn from my mistakes,” I don’t think I’m really helping anyone lately.
For me, it’s time to focus intensely on goals and achieve them. I want my daughters to be proud of their father. And right now, I feel more like I am letting them down.
More Personal Case Studies
One piece of content that is going to start rolling out regularly is the personal case study. I love collecting data, and I am working to demonstrate just how you can lose weight playing the Xbox Kinect.
Now, I know I can burn through the fat playing the Xbox. In fact, it’s why I haven’t ballooned back up to 300+ pounds. But now, I am going to show everything I do to lose weight, including what I eat in a day.
In fact, I am in the middle of working on a piece now. It’s going to be fairly large and full of information.
Weekly YouTube Videos
Creating YouTube videos takes a large swath of time. And because I am also building Writer Sanctuary’s channel, I don’t have a lot to put into others. However, I think I can swing a Monday morning video.
I want to go back into the trolling comment format. Personally, I find them fun to make. But I also want to start creating more informative pieces, such as ways to maximize Kinect games or easy ways to burn fat.
A few reviews would probably be a good thing as well.
Podcasting in Some Form
I’ve been talking about setting up a podcast for months now. As it hasn’t been a priority, I’ve crammed it on an ever-growing back burner. However, I am seriously considering moving it up to the front.
However, it’s kind of hard to start a podcast about health and fitness if I’m not working to be healthy and fit. I guess I can talk about the troubles with a manic depressive trying to lose weight as a stress eater.
People with mental issues have a harder time with virtually any goal. It’s easy to get sucked into thinking poorly of yourself, which isn’t conducive to self-improvement. Maybe that’s the way I should go with the podcast.
What Can I Do with Crossing Colorado?
At one point, Crossing Colorado had five times the audience it has now. A huge part of that is my own lack of effort. I have no doubt that it’s going to take a lot of work and research to bring it back up to where it was.
I’m fairly confident I can rebuild the brand, though. After all, it’s what I am paid for by my client. I just need to put in as much effort and care for my projects as I do for them.
