Although I am still not convinced that you need a gym membership in order to be healthy, they can be quite beneficial. In some ways, I feel like I’m cheating. I believe that anyone can lose weight and become more fit without paying high fees of gym memberships. However, there is something to be said about establishments like Anytime Fitness.

My Reasoning Behind Joining Anytime Fitness

My biggest concern about joining a gym or fitness center is how easy it is to stay home while paying for a monthly membership. I’ve seen a lot of people pay good money for something they don’t use. Aside from that, becoming a member can have great advantages.

Various Workout Stations

ExercisingI like the idea of being able to work on several parts of my body. For instance, my wife focused on pure upper body strength last night while I did a total workout. The only thing I didn’t work on was my stomach, which is what I focus on when doing core exercises.

Because our facility is quite small compared to others, the available options are a bit limited. However, there is a vast array of treadmills aligning the wall. Personally, I’d rather walk around outside. But I can see the appeal of being indoors and safe when cracking out a mile or two. I’m sure I’ll be using the treadmills myself when the snow starts to fall.

A Lack of Options

To my knowledge, we don’t really have a lot of good quality gyms in town. Sure there are a few around that many people seem to enjoy. But, I have yet to come across something similar to the areas in Denver. Anytime Fitness is one of those places that stand out here.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Anytime Fitness has a lot to offer in many areas around the country. I’m just a bit sour from the idea of having so few options available to me. We’ll have to see if this one pans out to be worthwhile.

Open 24 Hours

I know a lot of places are open 24 hours. Unfortunately, I don’t have that option. Since we live just on the edge of nowhere, it’s one of the few places I can go at three in the morning.

I’m one of those type of people who don’t like working out in front of large groups. I am quite shy and feel like everyone is looking at me funny when in places like this. Because it’s open all the time, I can go when I feel the most comfortable. Which is usually late at night.

Unfortunately, I am still a bit leery about going to Anytime Fitness. It’s not because I think the company is bad, but because I don’t necessarily like the layout of the establishment here. I’ve seen images of other fitness centers and how nice they look. Ours is more reminiscent of a warehouse. I’ll have to do a review about it in the future.

My Wife Joined

Since my wife was willing to pay for the 36-month membership, she wanted me to join as well. The first thing I said to her was, “If you think you’ll keep using it.” You see, we haven’t had the best track record in the past when it comes to maintaining a fitness membership.

At least my wife has several friends that go to Anytime Fitness. I hope they can help keep her motivated to keep working out. For me, I will just have to settle with trying to look my best so I can throw up some amazing before and after photos on this website.

Getting Serious About Fitness

gymSo far, my 80 pounds in 4 months goal hasn’t been going well. That’s been completely my fault, though. I have been seriously slacking when it comes to fitness and proper eating habits. Joining Anytime Fitness may give me the motivation I need to maintain a good workout routine. After all, I don’t really want to waste the money over the next 36 months.

Personally, I am tired of living like I do. I know my work and play keeps me tethered to a computer most of the time, but that doesn’t mean I have to balloon up. I highly doubt I will join any of the exercise classes, but only because I am a shy person. For me, it’s incredibly easy to burn more calories playing the Xbox than what many people can do with calisthenics.

Multiple Locations Around the Globe

One of the things I like about Anytime Fitness is that I can use the facilities in Denver when I go visit family. I don’t have to be locked into only working out in Sterling. This is great, especially since we plan on moving back to the front range eventually.

This was one of the biggest issues I had about joining any of the gyms here in town. For example, we could pay $400 to the rec center each year. But then I wouldn’t be able to work out anywhere else without paying extra.

Racking Up the Points

boosting exerciseI use Exercise.com when tracking my workouts. It uses a points-based system to pit yourself against others. Even though the social competition part of the app is no longer available, it’s still nice to see how I stack up against everyone else on the system. I am currently 872 out of thousands. Which is a bit depressing considering that I was at 825 before taking a hiatus from health.

It’s my goal to get into the top 100. Now, if someone out there knows of another fitness app that lets you do competitions with people directly, feel free to send me a tweet. I’m always looking to expand my tools.

Anyway, Anytime Fitness gives me the equipment I need to rack up a large number of points. For instance, I racked up more than 1,200 points last night within 35 minutes. After being away from a fitness center for so long, I also discovered just how out of shape I truly am. 🙂

Still Working Out At Home

Even though I will try to use Anytime Fitness as often as possible, I’m still going to put effort in workouts at home. I still use my dumbbells, resistance cables and love my Xbox Kinect. If I can keep up a good weekly routine between all of my equipment and memberships, I should easily reach my 80 pound goal by the end of December.
