Reviews: Chilly Cow Ice Cream, Peanut Butter Tub

Part of losing weight is cutting back on fattening snacks. For many, this includes ice cream. However, not all of these desserts are devastating to health. Take Chilly Cow ice cream, for example. It’s one of the healthier alternatives that doesn’t taste like wet cardboard.

In reality, the Chilly Cow brand is better than a lot of other “light” brands on the market.




What Is Chilly Cow Ice Cream?

Chilly Cow is a brand of light ice cream. It contains non-fat, ultra-filtered milk, which keeps the calories and carbs lower than traditional ice cream.

Keep in mind, this is not chocolate peanut butter. It’s more of a vanilla peanut butter ice cream alternative.

The way it’s processed gives the dessert a smooth and silky texture. In this particular type, the peanut butter flavor was very pronounced and has a good taste.

Unlike other brands in tubs, Chilly Cow ice cream is sold in packs of two. Each tub is considered one serving, which I found to be more than plenty for satisfying a sweet tooth. And because you don’t have to worry about scooping it from a tub, you can easily monitor your intake.

If you like ice cream bars on a stick, you can also pick these up from Chilly Cow which often range in the 110 calorie area. This is about half of what ice cream ranges from some of the other popular brands of ice cream.

I was only able to find a few different flavors at my local store, but apparently you can choose from up to seven great flavors:

  • Brown Butter Salted Caramel
  • Chocolate Brownie Batter
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  • Cookies ‘n Cream
  • Mint Dark Chocolate Chip
  • Sweet Cream Peanut Butter – which is now one of my favorites.
  • Vanilla Graham Swirl

Unfortunately, my local Walmart only had three of these flavors. And I look forward to trying the others if they become available. I suppose I’ll have to search around.

Why Should You Want Chilly Cow Ice Cream?

For those who like desserts but don’t want the excess in calories, Chilly Cow ice cream has you covered. For instance, the number of calories in a 1/2 pint of the peanut butter was only 190. This is about par for other light brands such as Halo Top.

Perhaps the biggest reason why I like this brand is because of the serving sizes. Personally, I have an issue when it comes to scooping out perfect amounts for each serving when I buy a big tub. The end result is eating way too much.

I simply lack will-power. And I like to keep my intake monitored as closely as possible through tools like MyFitnessPal. Chilly Cow products make this part of snacking much easier to manage. I don’t have to think about the serving size and can just scan it in and go.

In Chilly Cow, you get two 1/2 pint tubs for the same price as a single pint of other brands. And it works great to keep myself monitored when it comes to snacking.

The treat itself has a very nice texture and a decent flavor. However, the first time you taste it may seem a little weird. I can’t really describe it, but it’s kind of like an odd, freezer-burnt taste that isn’t very pronounced. It’s not terrible, but its a bit odd.

Then again, Chilly Cow ice cream is a lot better than some of the other “healthy” ice creams I’ve had in the past. In fact, I know of one that was more akin to flavored ice cubes after sitting in the freezer for over a year.




What Kind of Health Benefits Are In Chilly Cow?

Some of the other things you might be interested in when it comes to nutrition is the amount of potassium, protein and vitamin A. For example, the peanut butter variety has up to 13g of protein per serving…much higher than some of the others I’ve had in the past.

Chilly Cow ice cream contains a small amount of Stevia leaf extract, which no doubt gives some of its sweet taste. Because Stevia is far sweeter than sugar, a little bit goes a long way. 1

It also has skim milk and other components you’d find in a light version of ice cream. Because of this, you can expect to get about 35% of your daily need of calcium.

Another highlight is the 10g of fiber for those who are low in their daily intake. This one snack consists of about 40% of your daily value for a 2,000 calorie diet. This helps keep your digestive tract maintained while improving your blood sugar levels. 2

Will It Work to Help Lose Weight?

Whether you’re watching calories, fats or carbs, Chill Cow ice cream accommodates those who are looking to lose weight. It’s a way to get a decent snack without feeling like you ate flavored ice.

One of the ways it helps me lose weight is by maintaining my portion sizes. When I buy a pint, I often find it difficult to just eat half of it or scoop out a suggested serving. This helps me keep the snacking to ideal levels.

Products like this are what helped me lose 70 pounds so far as they reduce the chances of overeating.

However, it all matters in how you eat. Just because something is “light” doesn’t mean you should fill up on it. Anything in excess has potential to be bad, including non-fat ice cream. Just make sure you’re burning more than your intake.

Where Can You Get Chilly Cow Ice Cream?

In my area, I was able to pick it up at Walmart for $3.98. This comes in the two-pack, 1/2 pint tubs and is about the same price as other name branded pints in the freezer isle. You can also get the 5-pack bars for the same price, which are even lower in calories.

I think next time I’ll pick up the ice cream bars as they are even better portion sizes for watching my intake…and it’s also the same price.

What’s the Bottom Line?

In the end, Chilly Cow ice cream didn’t taste like flavored water, had a nice texture and a pretty good taste. If you need a healthy alternative to frozen snacks while losing some weight, this is among one of the better products I’ve tried.

I’m sure I’ll pick this up again especially since they have flavors I am interested in trying.
